1 a number of things lying on top of one another, or an amount of sth lying in a mass (一)摞,迭,堆: a pile of books/sand 一堆书╱沙He put the coins in neat piles. 他把硬币摞得整整齐齐。She threw the clothes in a pile on the floor. 她把衣服成堆扔在地板上。 ☞A pile may be tidy or untidy. A heap is untidy. pile可以指整齐的一摞,也可以指不整齐的一堆,而heap则是指不整齐的一堆。
2 (usually plural 常用复数) (informal 非正式)piles of sth a lot of sth 大量;一大堆: I've got piles of work to do this evening. 今晚我有大量工作要做。

pile into, out of, off, etc sth(informal 非正式) to go into, out of, off, etc sth quickly and all at the same time 蜂拥而入╱出╱去: The children piled onto the bus. 孩子们一窝蜂挤进公共汽车。 pile up (used about sth bad) to increase in quantity (指坏事)积累,堆积: Our problems are really piling up. 我们的问题确实越积越多。
