1. 表示“总共”，用来说明数量 (可放在数字之前、句首或句末)。如：
总共10人。
正：There are altogether ten people.
正：There are ten people altogether.
正：Altogether there are ten people.
2. 表示“完全”，可以修饰动词、形容词、副词、介词短语等。如：
I forget it altogether. 我全忘了。
The thing is not altogetherimpossible. 这并非完全不可能。
I am altogether on your sidein this matter. 在这个问题上，我完全站在你一边。
3. 表示“总的说来” (通常置于句首)。如：
It was raining, butaltogether it was a good trip. 虽然天下着雨，但总的说来旅途还是很愉快。
