In disco clubs, DJs needed to keep music playing between each song so people could dance. They began to mix parts of the song that was playing with the next song, using a heavy drum beat to tie it together. This became very popular because of the treat rhythm. People looked forward to that part so they could dance even more. Very soon, the DJs began to use a drum machine so they could develop their mix of songs more and even make up some of their own music. To keep the audience excited, an MC would speak between the songs, to introduce the DJ, tell jokes, or tell stories. This practice was the beginning of rap, which is used in today's hip hop music a lot.
