1 [T] give sb sth;give sth to sb to let sb have sth, especially sth that he/she wants or needs 给(尤指人家想要或所需的东西): I gave Jackie a book for her birthday. 我给杰基一本书作为生日礼物。Give me that book a minute -- I just want to check something. 把这书给我看一会儿,我只是想查个东西。I gave my bag to my friend to look after. 我把我的提包交给朋友照管。I'll give you my telephone number. 我会把我的电话号码给你。The doctor gave me this cream for my skin. 医生给我开了这种乳膏搽皮肤。He was thirsty so I gave him a drink. 他很渴,我给了他一杯饮料。Just phone and I'll give you all the help you need. 尽管给我挂电话,我会给你所需的一切帮助。
2 [T] give sb sth;give sth to sb to make sb have sth, especially sth he/she does not want 给(尤指人家不想要的东西): Mr Johns gives us too much homework. 约翰斯先生给我们太多家庭作业。Playing chess gives me a headache. 我一下棋就会头痛。
3 [T] to make sb have a particular feeling, idea, etc 令人有某种感觉、想法等: Swimming always gives me a good appetite. 游泳总是令我胃口大开。to give sb a surprise/shock/fright 令某人吃惊╱震惊/惊恐What gives you the idea that he was lying? 你怎么会觉得他是在撒谎呢?

5 [T] give sb sth;give sth to sb to speak to people in a formal situation (在正式场合)讲话: to give a speech/talk/lecture 发表演说;发表谈话;讲课The officer was called to give evidence in court. 那个警官被传唤出庭作证。Sarah's going to give me a cooking lesson. 萨拉要给我上一堂烹饪课。
6 [T] give (sb) sth for sth;give (sb) sth (to do sth) to pay in order to have sth 付钱以换取某物: How much did you give him for fixing the car? 你付了他多少修车费? (figurative 比喻) I'd give anything (= I would love) to be able to sing like that. 只要能唱得那样好,我出什么代价都愿意。
