1 the front [C] [usu.sing] the side or surface of sth/sb that faces forward 正面;前面: a dress with buttons down the front 正面直行扣钮的连衣裙the front of a building (= the front wall) 建筑物的正面a card with flowers on the front 正面有花的图案的贺卡She slipped on the stairs and spilt coffee all down her front. 她在楼梯上滑了一交,衣服前面泼满了咖啡。
2 the front [C] [usu.sing] the most forward part of sth; the area that is just outside of or before sb/sth (某人或某物)前面: Young children should not travel in the front of the car. 小孩坐汽车不该坐前座。There is a small garden at the front of the house. 屋前有个小花园。
On the front of means ‘on the front surface of sth ’ The number is shown on the front of the bus. In front (of sth) means ‘further forward than another person or thing ’; before sb/sth else A car has stopped in front of the bus. There were three people in front of me in the queue. At/In the front (of sth) means ‘in the most forward part inside sth ’ The driver sits at the front of the bus. Look at these sentences too The teacher usually stands in front of the class. The noisy children were asked to sit at the front of the class (= in the front seats). on the front指“在…的正面”:The number is shown on the front of the bus.公共汽车的路线号码标在正面。in front (of sth)指“在前方”:A car has stopped in front of the bus.公共汽车的前边停了一辆汽车。·There were three people in front of me in the queue.我前面还排了三个人。at/in front of (sth)指“在前部”:The driver sits at the front of the bus.公共汽车司机坐在车子最前端的地方。再看以下句子:The teacher usually stands in front of the class.老师通常站在全班学生面前。·The noisy children were asked to sit at the front of the class. 2 if you do sth in front of sb, you do it when that person is there in the same room or place as you 在…的面前(做某事): I couldn't talk about that in front of my parents. 我在爸妈面前不能谈那件事。
up front(informal 非正式) as payment before sth is done 预先支付: I want half the money up front and half when the job is finished. 我想先支一半工资,做完了再支另一半。
